Description
This striking horizontal trade sign, likely dating to the Edwardian era (c.1910), advertises a specialised service: “MAIL CARTS & PERAMBULATORS RE-TYRED & REPAIRED.” The term “re-tyred” refers to fitting new solid rubber tyres, once standard on wheeled infant carriages and delivery carts.
The bold black typography—accented with a red outline and border—makes this a textbook example of early 20th-century British signwriting, aimed at street-level legibility. Lithographed by Sands Bros., a known London printer, this was probably displayed in a shop window or affixed to an outside wall.
