Description
A lithographed and embossed tin sign advertising “JULES ROBIN & C° COGNAC”, centred on a full bottle set atop a galloping horse, framed by an ornate grapevine-and-scroll border. Chinese copy positions it for export: “法国罗彬…公司” (French Robin company) and “罗彬马牌白兰地酒” (“Robin Horse-Brand cognac/brandy”), with a quality claim along the left column (“mellow flavour… wholesome/pure”).
Jules Robin’s house was a major Cognac shipper and produced multilingual advertising for Asian markets in the early 20th century, when French brandy makers competed heavily for treaty-port and regional distributors.
The piece is printed directly to tin (not enamel), with corner hanging holes and raised embossing typical of interwar shop signage; the pale ground was chosen to keep the black Chinese characters crisp and legible.
