Description

The arched headline “Maison fondée en 1848” means “House founded in 1848,” above a single large bottle of Chapin & Cie “Cuvée Continental.” The label reads “Vin mousseux, méthode champenoise” (“sparkling wine, Champagne method”) and “Varrains près Saumur” (“Varrains near Saumur”), making the bottle itself the whole sales message.

Chapin’s sparkling-wine business was associated with Varrains near Saumur in the late 19th and early 20th century.

This is a French chromolithographed card sign rather than a linen-backed poster, with a visible printer credit for Établissements F.A.C., Cognac and a hanging tab at the top. The pale ground, oversized red lettering, and naturalistic bottle rendering fit turn-of-the-century drinks advertising.
