Description

A poised cabaret dancer in top hat, gloves, heels and black feathers stands before a red-and-yellow spotlight burst beneath the title “Bal du Moulin Rouge” and the line “femmes, femmes, femmes…” (“women, women, women…”). The composition is spare, theatrical and instantly legible.

Gruau’s fashion-trained line made him one of the defining image-makers of postwar Paris glamour, and his Moulin Rouge posters carry that same elegant economy.

The design relies on flat colour, sweeping contour, and sharp contrast rather than detailed background setting, giving it the feel of a fashion illustration translated into poster form.
