Description

Bertram Prance’s post-war British Railways poster looks across Peterborough’s busy Market Square towards the historic Butter Cross Guildhall and market cross. Covered stalls fill the square beneath a broad summer sky, while shoppers, traders and vehicles animate the streets around them.

A British Railways delivery van in the foreground anchors the historic setting in the modern post-war era. Prance’s carefully observed architecture, softly modelled colour and wealth of incidental detail create an engaging record of English civic life as well as an attractive Eastern Region travel image.

Originally this poster would have had a lower border showing “Peterborough” and “British Railways”
