Polish film poster for Sklep przy głównej ulicy, the Czechoslovak wartime drama known internationally as The Shop on Main Street. Wiktor Górka reduces the film’s moral tension to a stark arrangement of black hands and small ochre buttons, set beneath distressed block lettering and the names of Cannes-honoured performers Ida Kamińska and Jozef Kroner.
The restrained palette and rough graphic surfaces make this a powerful Polish School design: immediate, symbolic and psychologically charged.
