Description

Within a circular Venetian scene, two costumed figures exchange a biscuit against a lagoon skyline and ceremonial poles, while the headline “Baicoli” and line “i famosi Biscotti Veneziani” translate as “the famous Venetian biscuits.” The lower cartouche praises them in dialect as the finest, sweetest and lightest biscuit for dipping in cup or glass.

Issued for A. Colussi of Venice and dated 1949 in the lower margin, the poster belongs to post-war Italian food advertising that sold regional identity as much as the product itself. Baicoli were promoted as a distinctly Venetian speciality and refined household staple.

Printed by Arti Grafiche F.lli Bonetti of Milan and signed Emka at lower left, the design uses a cream ground, saturated red border and deep blue roundel in a late Art Deco idiom.
